ANGUL:A 10-year-old tusker died of electrocution in Bantala Forest range in Angul district last night and the forest officials arrested the accused Joginath Pradhan in this connection today.The dead body of the tusker was found this morning at the outskirts of the village Talagarh in Bantala police station area.
According to reports, this morning the villagers of Talagad near here spotted a body of a 10-year-old tusker near their village under Bantala forest range. They immediately informed the forest department.
Bantala forest range officials rushed to the spot along with the team. The officials inquired about the death and called in veterinary doctors for a post mortem report. The post mortem was conducted today by doctors.
According to sources, there was a lone tusker wandering in Angul forest range areas for the past few days.It is alleged that some people in the area habitually lay electric wire on the ground to poach wild animals like deer and others.
The lone tusker last night came into the jungle near Talagada village.The accused Pradhan there laid electric wire trap for poaching animals despite forest department warning not to do so many times.
The Bantala Forest range officials rushed to the spot and arrested the house owner Joginath Pradhan.
"We were patrolling in Talagada area last evening and launched awareness programme among the villagers not to lay electric trap to save the wild animals. Joginath has a house built in the jungle near the village.Last night the lone tusker had come into the area and came into contact with the live wire trap.We have arrested Joginath and forwarded him to court.The villagers also co-operated with us,said ranger.
Last month,on June 15 the carcass of a 10-year-old female elephant was found near Jaganathpur village under Karatmunda forest section of Angul forest range.Locals suspect it was due to electrocution too.
