NEW DELHI:The ongoing COVID-19 lockdown in India's New Delhi has been extended by a week further till May 24, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Sunday.

Kejriwal told the media that COVID-19 cases are showing a downward trend in Delhi and people were recovering from the infection.

"We don't want the gains that we have achieved in the past days to go vain at once, so we are extending the lockdown for one more week," Kejriwal said.

The ongoing lockdown is extended till May 24 5:00 a.m. local time.

The national capital has been under lockdown to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic since April 19.

On Sunday morning, the health ministry said the city recorded 6,430 new cases and 337 deaths in the past 24 hours. A total of 3,11,170 new COVID-19 cases and 4,077 related deaths were registered in the past 24 hours across the country.

India is witnessing a resurgence in COVID-19 cases and the second wave of the pandemic has caused a shortage of oxygen and essential medicines in the country's hospitals.

Some states have flagged the federal government about the shortage of COVID-19 vaccine stocks.
