Four Dead After Consuming 'Spurious Liquor In Odisha's Angul Village

Angul:At Least four daily wage labourers  were dead  after consuming spurious liquor in Angul district in past three days .While two persons have died on Sunday evening the third one died on Monday and another succumbed on Tuesday morning.

The incident took place at Pathargarh village under Purunakot police station on ,the police said, adding an investigation in the matter is under way.


Two to three more persons are allegedly in a critical condition.


The deceased have been identified as Anil Pradhan,19,Tukuna Pradhan,28,Sasiikanta Dehury,35 and Pramod sahoo,45  from Patharagada village under Purunakote police station.


The deceased are daily wage labourers and were engaged in a roof construction work  of a contractor in same village. After their work over, they allegedly consumed country liquor. Soon  after taking the liquor, Anil Pradhan fell ill and died last evening. Later, Tukuna also succumbed,locals said.


The brother of Sasikanta Dehury said,”My brother Sasikanta took spurious liquor on Sunday  with other co-workers(villagers) following which his illness shot up.He asked me to admit him into a hospital. So I brought him to the district head quarter hospital on Monday. But I lost him the same day. We want government help to maintain the family's livelihood”.


In a critical condition,till Tuesday four more persons were admitted into the district head quarter hospital,among which another,a 45-year-old Pramod Sahoo,45 also   succumbed on Tuesday morning.


Jagmohan Meena,SP Angul in a press  note said that a  complainant was  reported in an FIR that Kalia Dehury is a building contractor. He took a contract of construction of a house in village Pathargarh. He engaged about 15-20 labourers for the work. In addition to payment, he used to give labourers liquor also which was illegally made by him.


It is alleged in the above noted case that Kalia Dehury manufactured illegal illicitly distilled liquor in the forest of village Pathargarh. He was assisted by Basant Dehury and Sashikant Dehury in manufacturing illicit liquor. Basant and Sahishkant were also engaged in the construction work as labourers and consumed liquor after labour work,SP Jagmohan Meena said.


It is further revealed in the FIR that four persons have died including one accused Sashikant Dehury.Post Mortem of two dead bodies has been conducted, viscera has been preserved and blood samples of the victims have been collected to ascertain the cause of death.

 Accused Basant Dehury is admitted in hospital and is undergoing treatment.


Accused Kalia Dehury has been apprehended by Police,Angul SP said.
